Commonly Asked Questions

What is the difference between a backflow preventer and a cross connection control device?

There is no difference. Backflow preventers are often referred to as CCCD's (or Cross Connection Control Devices). These are two names for the same thing. 'Backflow' refers to the back-flowing of contaminated water into clean water.

What exactly does a backflow preventer do?

A backflow preventer stops contaminated water from reversing back into clean drinking water.  When functioning properly, this device only allows water to flow one direction and prevents it from backflowing the wrong way.

How do I know if I have one?

If you live in a Condo or Townhouse with the main water lines coming into your unit, you will have this device along with water meters and/or multiple manifolds for your neighbours.

High-rise buildings and businesses will also have backflow preventers where the main water supply comes into the building.

Is testing mandatory?

Yes. Testing of Backflow Preventers is required by the City of Calgary Bylaw 40M2006 and is a Federal, Provincial, and Civic requirement. Failure to comply may result in fines, or even water shut-offs. For more information please see City of Calgary Cross Connection FAQ

How often do backflow preventers need to be tested?

Backflow devices located on irrigation, fire, and boiler systems require yearly testing, as well as backflows on domestic water systems  and in any businesses sharing common water with the public.

How long does this test take?

Our highly experienced and certified Service Technicians complete this test in 20 - 30 minutes.
